AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 006 013

"Apparently this is the reward I get for years of screwing with super-science. In short, I pissed in God's eye - and He blinked." ~Dr. Thaddeus S. "Rusty" Venture

Science is already pretty super. There are many reasons, not the least of which is that it is esoteric and arcane knowledge paired with cutting-edge research by daring and imaginative individuals. (I mean, it's not great for chimps or lab rats being given wildly experimental erectile dysfunction, but it's great for your dick). But for those who dare to dream, there is a whole world to win.

Commonly, scientists and their scientific pursuits have been hamstrung by the need to appeal for another round of funding (often five year intervals), the strictures of governmental regulation, law, society, and general morality. But what if you didn't have to worry about such red tape and could advance humanity's understanding by using unstable materials, perhaps procured in a less-than-legal manner, and testing them on yourself? It's just the most expedient thing to do.

Super science is the reason humans walked on the moon, as well as tamed the ancient mythosaur (though both of these examples also required grit, something many humans have including all astronauts and super-scientists). However, it is not always the goal to better mankind that drives these renegades of their time and age, and indeed many succumb to madness or Power Madness, as well as radiation poisoning or other forms of poisoning. They were the real heroes.

For every guy that successfully turned his body into a self-regenerating Reptilian, there were fifty more who ended up choking to death on their bloody bile from the failure of a serum they'd concocted.

While controversial for as many reasons as there are fields of super-science, it is also undoubtedly a fact that such lunatics and their inventions are necessary to protect us from time travelers, pandemics, and alien invasion. If we have to deal with a few cloned velociraptors or the occasional zombie outbreak, them's the breaks.
